Faculty:

Teemu Malmi
Teemu Malmi is Professor of Accounting at Aalto University School of Business. He specializes in managerial control systems, strategy implementation and cost, and profitability accounting.

Professor Malmi has served as a consultant to a large number of companies from different industries, e.g. Computers, Electrical, Energy, Finance, Food processing, Furniture, Health Care, Media, Metal and Engineering, Paper and Pulp, Pharmaceuticals, Rental Services, Retail, telecom and Transportation/logistics. He has also served ministries, municipalities and hospitals.


Jari Melgin

Jari Melgin serves a Professor of Practice at Aalto University School of Business. He specializes in accounting, finance, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations and corporate governance.

Professor Melgin has broad consulting experience in Financial Management, Corporate Finance, and Investments. He has also a long professional experience as a CFO in several international corporations.


Vesa Puttonen

Vesa Puttonen is Professor of Finance and Head of Finance Department at Aalto University School of Business. He specializes in strategic finance, risk management, portfolio management and marketing financial services.

Since 2001 Puttonen has been serving as a professor in the Department of Finance at Aalto University School of Business. He’s earlier positions include Visiting Scholar at New York University, Stern Business School; Managing Director at Conventum Fund Management Ltd; Senior Vice President, Equity Products and markets, HEX Helsinki Exchanges and Assistant Professor at Helsinki School of Economics.

Professor Puttonen has published several books and articles on different fields of strategic finance, risk management and behavioral finance. Puttonen has published in e.g. Financial Analysts Journal, Financial Management, Journal of Banking and Finance, Management Sci-ence, Journal of Asset Management and Journal of Financial Services Marketing.


Matti Suominen

Matti Suominen is Professor of Finance at Aalto University School of Business. He specializes in information economics in financial markets, market microstructure and corporate finance.

Suominen has previously worked as a consultant at the European Corporate Finance Practice of McKinsey & Co. and as a Chief Dealer in the Options and Futures Markets in Finland. From 1997 until 2006 he was in the full time faculty at INSEAD, working first as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor of Finance. Although already also at the Aalto University, between 2006 and 2015 he has continued to work with INSEAD as an Adjunct Professor of Finance or as a Visiting Professor of Finance.

Suominen is actively involved in management consulting to financial institutions and executive education. He has taught in the MBA, PhD and executive education programs. He has also taught in several company specific programs worldwide.

Matti Suominen did his PhD in Financial Economics in 1997 at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has also worked as a Visiting Associate Professor at Wharton.


Harri Seppänen

Dr. Harri Seppänen acts as a Research Associate in Accounting at Aalto University School of Business. He specializes in strategic performance analysis and measurement, credit risk assessments and firm valuation.

Dr. Seppänen executes various types of industry/company analyses and firm valuations for M&A’s and legal disputes, violations of antitrust laws, municipal outsourcing, as well as financial modeling for business ventures. He has international and domestic experience on IPO, M&A, Private Equity, and investment analyses as a CFO and Head of Investment Analysis at Kouri Capital Group.

He also renders independent advisory services in financial analysis and firm valuation. Organizations that have cooperated with him are, for instance, African Development Bank, BCG, Ernst & Young, Fidelity, Finnvera, McKinsey & Co, Moody’s Investors Service, Nokia, Nordea, Reuters, PwC, and Stora Enso.


Risto Walden

Risto Walden, Lic.Sc. (Econ. and Bus.Adm.), KLT-accountant, is a taxation and accounting expert at Bilanssi Oy. He specializes in in accounting and taxation.

Walden has extensive experience as an instructor in accounting and taxation, both in the public and private sector. He has also written several books in the fields of accounting and taxation.

He previously worked at Aalto University’s Department of Accounting and in tax inspection functions at Finnish Tax Administration. He is a member of the Board of Directors at the Taxpayers’ Association of Finland. In 2003, Walden was named Teacher of the Year at Helsinki School of Economics.


Katja Kolehmainen

Dr. Katja Kolehmainen serves as a Senior Advisor at Finnish Ministry of Finance. She specializes in strategic financial management, forecasting, scenario analysis, and investment decision making.

Dr. Kolehmainen is also Vice Chairman of Board Partners Helsinki, an association that works with small and medium sized companies to improve the quality of board work.

Before joining the ministry, she worked as a Director for Capful Ltd., a strategy consultancy company specializing in scenario planning and strategic foresight, an Assistant Professor for Strategic Management Accounting at Aalto University, and a Director for strategic planning at If and Vattenfall.


Ben Nothnagel

Ben Nothnagel is a Senior Advisor at Aalto University Executive Education and has worked with Aalto EE for more than 20 years. He specializes in developing the leadership skills of executives who are part of ambitious businesses.

Nothnagel’s focus is on encouraging individuals and organizations to excel by increasing self-awareness, creating understanding of the individual diversity of performance and results, enhancing influencing-skills and building high-performance leadership teams.

Nothnagel’s current research focus on three main areas: neuro-leadership (practical lessons that leaders can learn from neuro-science), cognitive decision-making and emotional-intelligence.

Nothnagel teaches periodically in Aalto Executive Education Executive MBA programs at various locations in Europe and Asia. He is the owner of Benna Oy and is a Senior Advisor at Aalto EE. He works as a consultant and executive-coach all over the world, including the Nordic-countries, Germany, the United States and Asia. His clients include companies such as ABB, Basware, Cargotec, Danfoss, Daimler, Fazer, Finnair, GE, Hewlett-Packard, HKScan, Michelin, Ruukki, Vaisala and Yahoo.

Nothnagel is an Attorney at Law, Myers-Briggs Certified Interpreter and Certified Emotional-Intelligence Practitioner.


Pekka Mattila

Dr. Pekka Mattila serves as a Professor of Practice at the Aalto University School of Business. He works frequently with European, Asian, African and North-American executive audiences on themes of strategic management and agility, strategy co-creation, business model innovation, executive leadership, top team dynamics, change management, organizational culture and strategic marketing.

Since spring 2011 he has served as the Group Managing Director and Associate Dean of Aalto University Executive Education.

In addition to his academic activities Dr. Mattila has conducted an active business career. Currently he serves as the Chairman of the Board or as a Member of the Board at a number of innovative companies. Previously he served in executive, management and senior staff positions in the Nordic financial services industry. Currently he serves as a Member of the Board of The Finnish National Gallery. From 2009 till 2017 he served as the Chairman of the Board of the Helsinki Festival. He is a Founding Member of Nordic Institute of Business and Society.

Dr. Mattila holds a doctorate and masters in sociology at the University of Helsinki and an Executive MBA at London Business School. Over the years, he has frequently visited a number of prestigious European and Asian universities teaching management, organizational behaviour, marketing and sociology. Dr. Mattila has authored a number of managerial books on leadership, change management and strategic marketing and sales.

Dr. Mattila’s consulting and coaching career started in 2003, and his corporate clients comprise over 280 Nordic and international companies, entrepreneurial ventures as well as prominent public sector institutions and NGOs.



Contents and Schedule
The Aalto Financial Executive consists of three training modules with a total of nine training days.

The modules are structured according to MBA / Executive MBA requirements. Each module includes a pre-assignment and pre-readings as well as a take-home assignment, and is individually graded.

Module 1: Corporate Strategy and Driving Growth

This module focuses on strategy and strategic decision-making. Participants will first discuss different perspectives on corporate and business strategy as well as strategy implementation. They will learn how measures can be derived from strategy, how to apply contemporary corporate governance concepts, and how to assess and control financial risks in their company.

Module 2: Advanced Financial Analysis and Tax Strategy

This module focuses on advanced financial analysis, company valuation, and tax strategy. Participants will learn to interpret and utilize financial statement information for a range of decision-making purposes. They will also be better able to evaluate company value and carry out strategic tax planning.

The modules are also available as stand-alone three-day programs for a fee of 3 590 eur (+ VAT) each.

Please note that the program fee does not include travel expenses or accommodation. VAT is applicable to private persons and Finnish companies.

Terms of cancellation:
If the program participation has not been paid online upon registration, and/or unless another payment schedule is stated in the program description, the program is invoiced in one installment before the start. The cancellation fee is 20 % of the program fee for cancellations made 15-21 days before the start of the program, and 50 % of the program fee for cancellations made 8-14 days before the start of the program. There is no refund for cancellations made within 7 days of the start of the program or not made at all.
